A workshop is what it says . . . a place where you go to study and learn to work on your trade or art. In this case it is a place to test your knowledge and to further the studying of visual fine art that piques your interest.
Workshop Description:
Plein air workshops are four hours in length. The instructor will limit the attendance to four students per class for a more rewarding and successful experience. Students are brought to a location and taught how to capture a scene in oil or acrylic paints. Susan will demonstrate how to start your painting and explain what makes a strong composition. You will be learning color theory, compositional design and how to capture the mood and feel of a summer's day in New England.
Portrait workshops are held in the artist's studio. These workshops are three hours in duration and you may create in the medium of choice. Susan will demonstrate how to start a portrait. The students will watch Susan demonstrate the portrait first, then will spend the remaining time being tutored as they go along. The model requires breaks, and critique will be on-going during these respites.
Susan teaches both plein air painting workshops as well as portrait workshops during the summer months
Watch this page for the dates of workshops.

What is a successful workshop?
A successful workshop should leave you feeling that you have learned something, or many things, in a different way.
It is a success if it encourages you to keep creating.
It is a success when you realize that you are taking your art to a new height.
This means that you are seeing the importance that making art has for you. You may not ever leave a workshop with a completed piece of work, and to participate in one thinking that this is the reason is inaccurate. This is a place where you iron out kinks, and stretch your wings amongst others with the same pursuit. You can feel good after doing these studies because the work that you will be bringing to the next piece of art you choose to make will show the result of this day.
For an audio artist, a workshop is called a jam. They get together and bank some notes together . . testing out sounds.
For a performer, the workshop is called a rehearsal. They will make mistakes with the deliverance of a line, or movement, but it will help the opening performance.
For us, it is making forms appear out of nowhere that may or may not be quite what we saw, or wanted to see ourselves make; but when we have our next exhibit, the underlayers of study will show through.
A successful workshop is you, attending, and caring about your talent.
Congratulations for making this choice for yourself!
